Sophia Mwema

Professional Biography

Sophia Rajab Mwema is the Head of Human Resources at Bank of Africa (T) Limited, with over 15 years of progressive experience in human resources leadership within the banking and financial services sector. She provides strategic leadership in the development and implementation of people strategies that support business growth, organizational effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and sustainable workforce performance.

In her current role, Sophia oversees all aspects of Human Resources, including talent acquisition, succession planning, leadership development, employee relations, performance management, compensation and benefits, organizational development, workforce planning, and HR governance. She serves as a strategic advisor to Executive Management and the Board on workforce-related matters, organizational capability, culture transformation, and people risk management. 

Throughout her career at Bank of Africa (T) Limited, Sophia has successfully progressed through various leadership positions, including Prime Banking Officer, Human Resources Officer, Senior Human Resources Officer, Assistant Human Resources Manager, Human Resources Manager and HR Business Partner, Acting Head of Human Resources, and currently Head of Human Resources. Her extensive experience across both business and HR functions provides her with a unique ability to align people strategies with organizational objectives.

Sophia holds a Master of Science (MSc) in International Human Resources Management from Birmingham City University, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Arts and Education from the University of Dar es Salaam. She is also a Graduate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), reflecting her commitment to professional excellence and continuous learning. 

Her notable achievements include positioning HR as a strategic business partner, leading HR digital transformation initiatives, strengthening talent and succession management frameworks, improving employee engagement and retention, and maintaining strong compliance with labor and regulatory requirements. In recognition of her contributions to the profession, she was named among the Top 100 Executives and Best HR Manager of the Year 2023 and was previously recognized as a Role Model within the HR and Administration Department at Bank of Africa Tanzania.
